Manipulate Australian Bureau of Statistics’s ASGS data with R

Introduction

The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) is a statistical framework introduced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the statistics publication. This article shows a simple analyzing process of ASGS data with R.

1. Library and setup

2.Input ESRI file and filter data

Download ESRI shapefile from ABS website via this link and unzip it into working dictionary of R. Then input ESRI file.

Next, we want to select all the data of "Greater Sydney" and melt them into one polygon.


Adding a bottom layer of google map.

3. Population Density of Australia

Join pupulation density data to sa2

Make polygons outlines for the region of which population.density is more than 0.


Add areas whose population.density is more than 50.
